Goodwill Opportunity Center - Dalton To Host Coworx Staffing Solutions & Randstad Hiring Events In March

Goodwill Opportunity Centers in Chattanooga and Dalton will host multiple community hiring events during the month of April.

Hiring events at the Goodwill Opportunity Center in Chattanooga, located next to the Goodwill store at 7601 East Brainerd Road:

- Wednesday, April 15 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Pilgrim’s will conduct interviews for maintenance associates ($50,190-$57,990/year) and production associates and general laborers ($38,022–$44,470/year) for its plant in Chattanooga, and CDL drivers ($52,270/year) and general laborers ($45,760-$45,760/year) for its plant in Cohutta.

- Wednesday, April 29, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Partners Personnel will conduct interviews for forklift/cherry pickers, general laborers and machine operators.

Starting pay ranges from $15/hour to $18/hour. Aspiring forklift operators will be provided access to certification resources and expert guidance, helping them take the next step in their career development.

Hiring events at the Goodwill Opportunity Center in Dalton, located inside the Goodwill store at 1001 Market Street:

- Thursday, April 16, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Partners Personnel will conduct interviews for machine operators, forklift operators, and general warehouse associates. Starting pay ranges from $12/hour to $17/hour. Aspiring forklift operators will be provided access to certification resources and expert guidance, helping them take the next step in their career development.

- Wednesday, April 22, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Acceptance Insurance will conduct interviews for insurance sales representatives. Starting pay ranges from $12.50/hour to $15.87/hour.

Goodwill Opportunity Center - Dalton To Host Coworx Staffing Solutions & Randstad Hiring Events In March

The Goodwill Opportunity Center in Chattanooga will host a community hiring event with McDonald’s on Wednesday, May 6, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Opportunity Center, located next to the Goodwill store at 7601 East Brainerd Road, will welcome job seekers to take advantage of on-site opportunities and support.

McDonald’s is hiring management and crew positions for restaurant locations in Chattanooga, East Ridge, Fort Oglethorpe, Lookout Valley and Soddy Daisy.

Starting pay ranges from $11 to $15/hour.

In addition to hosting hiring events, the Goodwill Opportunity Center offers free career services, including career assessments, job search support, employment readiness assistance, digital skills training, financial education, and resume and interview preparation.

Goodwill Opportunity Center - Dalton To Host Coworx Staffing Solutions & Randstad Hiring Events In March

The Goodwill Opportunity Center announced that it will host two hiring events in Dalton, Georgia.

Those hiring events will take place on the following dates and times:

Tuesday, April 7 — 10:00am to 2:00pm
Friday, April 10 — 10:00am to 3:00pm

Hiring events will take place at the Goodwill Opportunity Center, located inside the Goodwill store at 1001 Market Street, in the Market Street Shoppes of Dalton.

On April 7, Goodwill will partner with Randstad, offering on-site interviews for general machine operators, creelers, and tufting machine operators. Pay starts at $15-$18 per hour.

On April 10, Goodwill will partner with Express Employment to offer on-site interviews for numerous positions. Those include:

Tufting machine operators — $14-$17/hour
Creelers — $12-$14/hour
Lift truck operators — $14-$17/hour
Menders — $13-15/hour
Extusion operators — $15-$17/hour
Shipping clerks — $15-$17/hour
Warper operators — $13-$15/hour

These are positions for Dalton, Chatsworth, Lafayette and Ringgold locations.

Opportunity Center in Dalton will host hiring events on Tuesday, March 24 and Monday, March 30 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. The Goodwill Opportunity Center is located inside the Goodwill Store at 1001 Market St., near Mountain Creek Harley-Davidson in the Market Street Shoppes of Dalton shopping center.

The hiring event this Thursday, in partnership with Coworx Staffing Solutions, will include on-site interviews for warehouse associate positions starting at $16 per hour and reach truck forklift driver positions starting at $17.50 per hour.

The hiring event on March 30, in partnership with Randstad, features opportunities for attendees to interview on-site for general machine operator, creeler and tufting machine operator positions starting at $15 to $18 per hour.

Goodwill holds grand opening at new East Ridge location

EAST RIDGE, Tenn. (WDEF) — Goodwill held a grand opening and ribbon-cutting for its newest store on Thursday.

It’s located in East Ridge at the former Food City on Ringgold Road.

Dozens braved the rain and lined up to be first in the door at the new location.

This new location features both a donation express and a full retail store.

Michelle Turner, director of marketing and communications for Goodwill of Greater Chattanooga told us, “We are longtime residents of East Ridge with our store that’s in front of the movie theater and we’re actually keeping that open as a donation center so it is still open for donations and we’ve opened up a new store here in the former Food City 3715 Ringgold Rd. near Amigos Mexican restaurant. It’s a much larger space and I know when people come and visit it they’re going to absolutely love it.”

A Goodwill Opportunity Center will be opening soon at the new East Ridge location. This provides employment services to local residents free of charge.

Goodwill to open new East Ridge store and donation center

EAST RIDGE — Goodwill Industries of the Greater Chattanooga Area will be opening a new location in East Ridge.

The grand opening celebration on Thursday, Feb. 26, will kick off with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 8:30 a.m., followed by the official store opening at 9 a.m, Goodwill says.

The new location will be at 3715 Ringgold Road in the former Food City building.

They say the over 40,000-square-foot building will feature a Goodwill store, a Donation Xpress Center, and a dedicated space for a future Goodwill Opportunity Center.

The previous Goodwill location in East Ridge, located at 5082 South Terrace, in front of the AMC movie theater, will remain open as a Goodwill Donation Xpress Center.

They say after the opening of the new East Ridge store, the local nonprofit will operate 16 stores and three Goodwill Opportunity Centers in the region.

“We’re proud to expand our presence and deepen our commitment to the community. Those who shop and donate join us in our mission to help people overcome barriers to employment, divert millions of pounds of items from local landfills, equip people with training to prepare for the future of work and make a real impact in Southeast Tennessee and Northwest Georgia.”

The store hours are Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Deborah Levine: Celebrating Goodwill Industries Day in East Ridge

The grand opening of the new East Ridge Goodwill facility on Feb. 26 was a reminder that despite the raging anger, grief and bloodshed in a world now at war, there is also kindness, generosity and courage.

With a packed parking lot, the line waiting to enter Goodwill at 8:30 a.m. on a rainy day extended around the building and beyond. Young, elderly and diverse, the folks in line looked happy and excited to be at the opening and eager to get goods at this huge new location, which filled the old Food City on Ringgold Road that had been empty for almost six years.

Goodwill was founded more than a century ago by Rev. Edgar Helms, who described it as "industrial program as well as a social service enterprise ... a provider of employment, training and rehabilitation for people of limited employability, and a source of temporary assistance for individuals whose resources were depleted."

According to Goodwill Industries, more than 85 cents of each dollar from purchases goes toward helping people transform potential into opportunity. An additional section of the East Ridge Goodwill is planned to help people with disadvantages find employment and earn a family-sustaining wage.

As East Ridge residents, my family has donated household items for decades at the old Goodwill store on South Terrace. In January, when my hubby and I dropped off some stuff, it had been transformed into an Attended Donation Center. We were amused that the manager called us a "cute couple" — Goodwill staff are super people oriented.

The newly trained East Ridge staff were eager to greet folks waiting in line, but first, they piled up inside, ready for the official kick-off celebration. I peeked in and was invited to join by my colleague, Cameron McAllister, Administrator of Economic and Community Development. We waited with other East Ridge officials for the opening declaration.

Stepping up to the microphone to make that declaration was the Vice President of Member and Investor Services at the Chattanooga Area Chamber of Commerce. I hadn't expected the Chamber to give the opening remarks, and certainly hadn't expected that the presenter would be my long-time friend, Ben Cairns.

Years ago, Ben and I served as officials for the local chapter of the Association for Talent Development (ATD), formerly American Society for Training and Development (ASTD). Developing goodwill in the workplace has always been our passion, as it is for both the Chamber and Goodwill, as noted in the proclamation that Ben read to the crowd.

"WHEREAS, Goodwill Industries of The Greater Chattanooga Area has aided in job and economic growth in our wonderful community; and ... has committed to help the Chamber achieve its mission to create a vibrant business environment through leadership that stimulates new business development and existing business growth, resulting in a higher standard of living and a better quality of life for the community."

The proclamation then went on to proclaim that day, Feb. 26, 2026, as "Goodwill Industries of The Greater Chattanooga Area Day."

Ben then inspired me with a huge hug. So about an hour after the opening, I came back with several bags of household goods to donate. By then, the aisles were filled with customers and smiling employees wearing the Goodwill blue polo shirts.

Suddenly two of the employees broke into a dance, twirling and swirling together, laughing all the way. I did a silly little dance myself and we all laughed together. This happy memoryis much needed now, and so is the passion for goodwill. It's time to go donate!

Chattanooga Goodwill opens bigger East Ridge store , turns old location to donation center

Half an hour before doors opened at the new East Ridge Goodwill, there were more than a hundred prospective shoppers lined up down to the street corner, with a determination for resale deals that a gray sky and steady rainfall couldn't falter.

At least 184 customers, not including babies and children, were in the first rush that filed two and three at a time into the 34,790-square-foot building Thursday morning. The Goodwill store at 3715 Ringgold Road occupies a former Food City with 17,390 square feet of retail space and includes a donation center and room for a future career services hub.

The store replaces the previous 7,000 square foot East Ridge location at 5082 South Terrace, which no longer sells products but will remain open solely as a donation center.

Gena Weldon , CEO of Goodwill Industries of the Greater Chattanooga Area, touted the local Goodwill chapter's century-long history and its impact on the community to commemorate the store opening.

"Every shirt, every piece of furniture, and every household item that's given to our organization represents someone's chance to learn new skills, gain meaningful work, and build a stronger future," she said.

Goodwill Industries of the Greater Chattanooga Area is a locally owned nonprofit acting as a member agency of Goodwill Industries International. The local chapter is governed by a six-member board of directors and operates in a 23-county area in Southeast Tennessee and Northwest Georgia.

The Ringgold Road location brings the number of Goodwill stores in the region to 16.

The nonprofit also operates three opportunity centers, two in Chattanooga stores and one in Dalton. A fourth career assistance location is planned for the East Ridge store, but there is no set timeline for when it will be open.

On opening day, most patrons were too busy shopping to stop for interviews. A handful even brought their own recording equipment to strap to carts and livestream their thrifting adventure.

Leola Jackson, a 76-year-old Chattanooga native, has been shopping at Goodwill "a long time."

"I love it. I like everything I get." She said. "Clothes and lamps and pillows."

Jackson also went to opening day for the Fort Oglethorpe Goodwill that debuted in November and was a frequent shopper at the previous East Ridge Goodwill store, where she would get gifts for her grandkids.

Goodwill hired 31 employees to service the new store and plans on filling more positions, including part-time staff, in the future. Method Architecture, Hoar Construction and Urban Story Ventures were involved in the renovation from a Food City interior. Urban Story purchased the shopping center in 2023 with plans to redevelop the former Food City.

Kinetic seeks to hire residential outside sales representatives. Requirements include a valid driver’s license, car insurance, the use of a reliable vehicle, a high school diploma or GED, the ability to maintain a distraction-free home workspace and the ability to work days, evenings and weekends.

In addition to hosting hiring events, the Goodwill Opportunity Center offers free career services, including career assessments, job search support, employment readiness assistance, digital skills training, financial and nutritional education, and resume and interview preparation.

Goodwill’s mission is to help people transform their potential into opportunity, and employees Josh and Steven are living proof of that.

Both Josh and Steven began their careers at Goodwill as Material Handlers at the Goodwill Distribution Center in downtown Chattanooga. Each had a goal: to advance their skills and open doors to new opportunities.

Steven came to Goodwill with forklift operating experience, but his certification had lapsed. Once he began working at Goodwill, he learned that Goodwill hosts a forklift operator training course at the Goodwill Opportunity Campus in Chattanooga.

“I knew I was capable of doing more,” said Josh. “I needed my forklift certification in order to accomplish this.”

“Steven and Josh entered the forklift program facing two very different challenges, yet both were determined to grow,” said Kai, Goodwill Distribution Center/Transportation Manager. “Steven was returning to the workforce and working to rebuild his confidence in operating heavy equipment. Josh had never driven heavy machinery and wanted to gain a new skill. The forklift class helped bridge those gaps. Their success shows how the right training can empower individuals and strengthen career opportunities.”

The Goodwill’s forklift course, in conjunction with Sunbelt Rentals and the Tennessee Department of Human Services Division of Rehabilitation Services/Vocational Rehabilitation, features American National Standards Institute (ANSI) classes 1, 4, and 5 warehouse forklift operator certification and career readiness training.

"Hosting these training events is just one way we contribute to our community and invest in the lives of our coworkers," said Rachel Inman, Vice President of Mission Services. "At Goodwill, we are dedicated to offering resources that support individuals in their job search and future career growth."

“I love working at Goodwill,” said Steven. “I wish I had started working here earlier in my life.”

Turning Potential into Opportunity: How Goodwill Helps Employees Grow

Darren and Jodi's Success

When Darren and Jodi made the decision to leave their longtime Florida home to help care for Jodi’s aging parents in Chattanooga, they never imagined how challenging the transition would be.

They started their new adventure by buying a house in Chattanooga. Darren turned in his notice at his job at the United Way in Fort Myers, and Jodi resigned from her role as an Executive Vice President at a wealth management company.

“We thought we would have no problem finding new jobs. We're both experienced in so many things,” said Jodi.

Despite their impressive resumes and years of experience, weeks turned into months of job searching. The stress was mounting. Jodi shared her concerns with her friend in Florida, who reminded her that Goodwill offers free career assistance.

Darren and Jodi visited the Goodwill Opportunity Center in East Brainerd. When they arrived, Opportunity Center Manager, Taryn, discussed their situation with them. She helped them update their resumes and connected them with resources and job leads tailored to their skills.

Soon after, Darren accepted a job as Operations Manager at the United Way of Greater Chattanooga, and Jodi accepted a job as a Client Business Advisor with Unum.

Goodwill To Host Forklift Operator Training Course Jan. 20-22

Goodwill Industries of the Greater Chattanooga Area is hosting a forklift operator training course in conjunction with Sunbelt Rentals on Tuesday, Jan. 20 through Thursday, Jan. 22. The class will be held at the Goodwill Opportunity Campus, 6104 Preservation Dr. in Chattanooga.

The three-day boot camp training is provided in partnership with the Tennessee Department of Human Services Division of Rehabilitation Services/Vocational Rehabilitation. The course includes American National Standards Institute (ANSI) classes 1, 4 and 5 warehouse forklift operator certification and career readiness training.

In addition to these types of training opportunities, the Goodwill Opportunity Campus and the two Opportunity Centers in Dalton and East Brainerd provide free employment services such as career assessments, job search support, employment readiness assistance, digital skills training, financial and nutritional education and resume and interview preparation.

"Hosting these training events is just one way we contribute to our community," said Rachel Inman, vice president of Mission Services. "At Goodwill, we are dedicated to offering resources that support individuals in their job search and future career growth."

Burlington recently collaborated with Goodwill Opportunity Centers in Chattanooga and Dalton to host a series of hiring events aimed at staffing Burlington store locations, including their new Fort Oglethorpe and Dalton stores.

Burlington store managers Forrest Thomasson, Desmond Hubbard, and Carol Kambhampati shared that hosting hiring events with Goodwill proved to be significantly more desirable than holding hiring events at their own stores.

“It was such a smooth process. Goodwill Opportunity Center staff members greeted applicants and made them feel welcome, which allowed us to focus on conducting interviews,” said Carol.

Attendees were also invited to sign up for Goodwill’s free My Career Advisor online platform, which supports job seekers through every step of their career journey. The platform offers tools and resources for career exploration, resume building, training and education, and access to community resources.

The collaboration between Burlington and Goodwill resulted in 132 job placements in our region.

Goodwill Celebrates Grand Opening of New Fort Oglethorpe Store and Donation Center

Goodwill Industries of the Greater Chattanooga Area celebrated the grand opening of its newest store and donation center in Fort Oglethorpe with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday, Nov. 6. The new location, at 1873 Battlefield Parkway in the Battlefield Centre shopping center next to Planet Fitness, includes a Goodwill store and a Donation Xpress Center.

The existing Goodwill store and donation center located at 516 Battlefield Parkway, near Big Lots in Fort Oglethorpe, remains open. The local nonprofit operates 16 stores and three Goodwill Opportunity Centers in the region. Their three Goodwill Opportunity Centers, two in Chattanooga and one in Dalton, provide career search and employment-readiness assistance at no charge to the community.

The store’s hours are Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Goodwill accepts donations during regular store hours.

Shoppers line up for Goodwill's grand opening

With the rising cost of items and inflation hitting 3% in September, more shoppers are turning towards thrifting.

Dozens were lined up for Goodwill's grand opening in Fort Oglethorpe on Thursday. This is the second Goodwill location in Fort Oglethorpe.

It's not just the unique pieces or vintage finds, the low prices are also drawing more people in.

"It was like a flashback of Black Friday, 2010 you know, there was the line, the excitement in the kind of the mass grabs, and then you go through your little cart," said Lee Tchison, local shopper.

During times where people are looking for ways to cut costs, thrift stores provide that outlets. From gently used clothes, shoes, decor and even appliances, customers take something old and make it new.

"During this day and time, as you said, you know to save money, that's everything now. So, it always helps. You know, if you can find a bargain here and there," said Susan Freeman, shopper.

Thrift stores are all across the Greater Chattanooga Area. You can clean your closet or garage and donate gently used items. Just contact your nearest thrift store to see what items they are in need of.

"I also like donating my own stuff, like, because even if there's stuff that you don't like anymore, there's definitely stuff that you could give away, that someone else will probably want, and they could have use of it. So I think it's like recycling," said Lily Mister, Shopper.

New Goodwill Store Opens

FORT OGLETHORPE, GA. (WDEF) – Goodwill Industries of the Greater Chattanooga Area celebrated the opening of a new store and donation center in Fort Oglethorpe on Thursday morning.

The event began with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 8:30 a.m., followed by the store officially opening its doors at 9.

The new location is at 1873 Battlefield Parkway in the Battlefield Centre shopping center, next to Planet Fitness.

The facility features approximately 15,660 square feet of retail space, with the entire building totaling around 37,224 square feet.

The site includes both a Goodwill retail store and a Donation Xpress Center, offering customers a single stop to donate gently used items and shop.

Goodwill says the original Fort Oglethorpe store and donation center near Big Lots on Battlefield Parkway will remain open.

Visitors who attended the opening this morning were able to take part in door prizes and giveaways as part of the celebration.

Nikki's Success Story

It was Nikki’s first day as a Goodwill employee. She always knew that she wanted a job centered on helping people, but she was still discovering exactly what kind of job that would be.

While attending orientation at the Goodwill Opportunity Campus that day, Nikki learned that Goodwill employs a team of mission integration specialists to support, equip, and empower Goodwill employees.

After she completed orientation, she met with Travis, her assigned Mission Integration Specialist. “During that meeting, I decided that I wanted to go to college to get a social work degree,” said Nikki. Travis shared information on how to apply for Tennessee Reconnect, a last-dollar scholarship that allows eligible adults to attend community or technical colleges tuition-free. Nikki completed the proper steps and received the scholarship. This fall, she began attending classes at Chattanooga State Community College!

“Nikki’s journey is a true example of what dedication and perseverance can achieve,” said Heather, Director of Retail Operations. “She began as a store associate at Goodwill in November of last year. Through her hard work, positivity, and commitment to excellence, she rose to a shift lead position and now serves as an assistant store manager. Nikki leads with heart, inspires those around her, and lives out Goodwill’s core values and guiding principles. Her story is just beginning, and her future is as bright as her impact on our mission.”

Denice Bizot loves shopping at Goodwill . “I started thrifting when I was 18 or 19 years old,” said Denice. “I don’t like the thought of something going into a landfill. I’m even wearing some items from Goodwill today. ”

Denice doesn’t just look for clothing and household items when she’s thrift shopping. She specifically looks for items she can repurpose.

“I’ve always used found objects. I repurpose and reinterpret the things I find ," said Denice. "Recently, I came across some stretched canvas panels at the Goodwill store , and I thought, why not? Art for me involves constant evolution , and I find the idea of doing something different exciting.”

The Goodwill Opportunity Center in Dalton will host a resource fair and a hiring event on Monday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. The Goodwill Opportunity Center is located inside the Goodwill Store at 1001 Market St., near Mountain Creek Harley–Davidson in the Market Street Shoppes of Dalton shopping center.

Organizations on hand will include:
• Partners Personnel is seeking to hire first, second and third-shift forklift operators and machine operators . Starting pay rates range from $16 to $20 per hour. Aspiring forklift operators will be provided access to certification resources and expert guidance, helping individuals take the next step in their career development.

• Southeast Health and Life helps individuals navigate the complex landscape of Medicare and Medicaid.

• Georgia Vocational Rehabilitation provides comprehensive support to individuals with disabilities, including employment assistance , training resources and access to specialized programs .

• Georgia Northwestern Technical College offers pathways for adult education, including GED preparation, workforce certifications and technical programs. They also provide guidance on financial aid and funding options.

• Tri-Med Family Medical Center delivers affordable healthcare. Their services include access to essential health programs and assistance with the cost of medications , ensuring participants can prioritize their well-being while pursuing employment.

In addition to hosting hiring events, the Goodwill Opportunity Center offers free career services , including career assessments , job search support , employment readiness assistance, digital skills training, financial and nutritional education and resume and interview preparation.

Two Goodwill Opportunity Centers will host insurance resource events on Tuesday, September 16, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Dalton and Thursday, September 18, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in East Brainerd .

The Goodwill Opportunity Center – Dalton is located at 1001 Market Street , inside the Goodwill store , and the Goodwill Opportunity Center – East Brainerd is located at 7601 East Brainerd Road , next to the Goodwill store.

Julia's Success Story

Julia’s part-time job was no longer meeting the needs of her growing family. Something had to change. One day, her friend told her about the free career services that are available at Goodwill. The very next day, Julia reached out to Taryn, a Goodwill Opportunity Center Manager .

“I had earned an associate’s degree , a bachelor’s degree , and a master’s degree , and I had experience as a grant writer, a marketing manager, and a fitness instructor,” said Julia. “I had all of this education and experience, but I couldn’t figure out how to best portray my varied work experience to employers. ”

Taryn listened closely to Julia’s story, helped her organize her education and work history, and created a personalized plan. She provided a professional resume template, coached Julia on how to tailor her applications, and helped her identify transferable skills that she hadn’t yet considered.

“It made a huge difference having Taryn on my side during my job search,” said Julia. “Navigating this process on my own had been discouraging. She encouraged me to apply for jobs I hadn’t discovered and even coached me on interviewing skills.”

Julia’s job search was finally complete when she accepted a job as a Healthy Living and Wellness Public Health Educator at the Hamilton County Health Department . She is now using her education and diverse experience to make a meaningful impact on our community.

Autumn Burt came to the East Brainerd Opportunity Center seeking help in advancing her career. Autumn was looking for a full-time, sustainable job in administrative work. After working with our Opportunity Center Manager on her resume, cover letter, and interview preparation, Autumn landed a job as an Administrative Office Assistant at Aspen Dental in February. “I love my job and being able to help fulfill the needs of our patients,” she said. In June, she was promoted to Office Manager. "Don't shy away from the opportunity to work with Goodwill," Autumn says, "it can only help you advance your career!"

Lexie Dill's Success

Last summer, students who were a part of the Pre-Employment Transition Summer Camp through the Tennessee Department of Human Services toured our Cleveland and Athens stores to learn more about the Mission, Vision, and Values of Goodwill Chattanooga.

On the tour, Alexis ‘Lexie’ Dill decided she wanted to work at Goodwill. With the help of her Vocational Rehabilitation counselor, Lexie created a resume, applied, interviewed, and landed the position as a store associate at our Cleveland store!

Lexie’s VR counselor, Roxana Horruitiner, said, “Lexie has been an incredible inspiration to all of us at Vocational Rehabilitation. Her unwavering dedication to achieving her job goal, while breaking barriers and defying stereotypes, is truly commendable. Through her participation in VR and her insightful tour of Goodwill, Lexie gained valuable firsthand experience that reinforced her passion and drive. These opportunities allowed her to hone her skills, build confidence, and take decisive steps toward her career aspirations. We have been honored to witness her success and are excited to see her continue to push boundaries and exceed expectations."

Goodwill To Host Forklift Operator Training Course

Goodwill Industries of the Greater Chattanooga Area is hosting a forklift operator training course in conjunction with Sunbelt Rentals on Monday, July 21, through Thursday, July 24. The class will be held at the Goodwill Opportunity Campus, at 6104 Preservation Drive in Chattanooga.

The 4-day boot camp training is provided in partnership with the Tennessee Department of Human Services Division of Rehabilitation Services/Vocational Rehabilitation. The course includes American National Standards Institute (ANSI) classes 1, 4 and 5 warehouse forklift operator certification and career readiness training.

"Hosting these training events is just one way we contribute to our community," said Rachel Inman, vice president of Mission Services. "At Goodwill, we are dedicated to offering resources that support individuals in their job search and future career growth."

Every year during the first full week of May, Goodwill organizations celebrate Goodwill Week. This Goodwill Week, the non-profit is encouraging you to “Get to Know Goodwill”.

Goodwill is a network of non-profit organizations governed by a local president and CEO and a board of directors. Goodwill Industries of the Greater Chattanooga Area sells donated goods to fund education, training, and employment for people in their 23-county territory in Southeast Tennessee and Northwest Georgia.

For more than 100 years, our area Goodwill has helped people find jobs, support their families and gain the satisfaction that comes from stable employment.

Andrew Pakkianathan was looking for a job after being laid off. While shopping at the East Brainerd Goodwill store, he saw the sign for the Goodwill Opportunity Center and walked in to see what the OC had to offer. Andrew was ready for a change and decided he would like to find a job in banking/finance.

Goodwill's Opportunity Center Manager helped Andrew with his resume, My Career Advisor, and sent him lists of jobs in the industry he was interested in. Andrew landed a position with True North Advisors at Raymond James as a Client Service Associate. He supports clients and financial advisors to ensure a seamless wealth management experience.

Goodwill purchases Fresh N’ Low building in Cleveland

Goodwill Industries of the Greater Chattanooga Area has purchased the former Fresh N’ Low grocery store building located at 2010 Broomfield Road SE in Cleveland. The Goodwill store opening is planned for later this year. This will be the 17th retail location for Goodwill Industries of the Greater Chattanooga Area.

A Goodwill Donation Xpress center is now open on-site daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. while the store is prepared for opening.

“We are excited to open a second Goodwill store and donation center in the Cleveland area,” said Solara Sain, Vice President of Operations. “When people shop or donate at Goodwill, they are changing lives by helping to provide free job training and employment opportunities.”

Solara Sain

From 1992 to 1995, the Bosnian War displaced more than 2 million people as they fled to seek safety from the violence - and Solara Sain was one of them. "I was granted the opportunity to move to the U.S. through a Lutheran Church refugee program," shares Sain. "I had little work experience, but I was determined to find a job that allowed me to earn a living."

At the time, Goodwill was opening a new store within walking distance of Sain's apartment, and she was hired as a store associate in January of 1997. Before the war, Sain never imagined she would live in America, so her English was very limited.

"When I arrived in the U.S., my English vocabulary consisted of about 200 words, shares Sain. "Every day presented a new challenge to learn something new."

Despite this obstacle, Sain persisted. She became a U.S. citizen in 2001, and from 1997 to 2005, Sain was promoted three separate times, eventually earning the title of store manager. But Sain's journey didn't stop there. She continued to participate in training programs and accept any opportunities for growth. From 2008 to 2020, Sain continued to advance in leadership roles at Goodwills across the country, from Oklahoma City to Dallas, Texas. "Today, I am proud to serve as vice president of retail operations at Goodwill Industries of the Greater Chattanooga area," says Sain.

"Goodwill is much more than a store. More than 85 cents from every dollar generated in stores by the sale of donated items is used to support our mission to help people transform their potential into opportunity through edu-cation, training, and employment."

Throughout her career progression at Goodwill, Sain was inspired to persevere by her late father, and his influence still guides her journey today. "He never stopped learning, which is why I enrolled in college to pursue his dream of all of his children obtaining a college degree," finishes Sain. "In May of this year, I will graduate with my master's degree."

The hiring event in partnership with The Cleaning Advantage is Wednesday, March 12, from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. The Cleaning Advantage is seeking to hire janitorial and floor care professionals for roles at Dalton State College.

Goodwill Industries of the Greater Chattanooga Area was honored to receive the Spirit of Chattanooga Award for Public Service Online Film at the 2024-2025 American Advertising Awards hosted by the American Advertising Federation Chattanooga.

The mission of the American Advertising Awards is to recognize and reward the creative spirit of excellence in advertising. The award ceremony was held last Thursday at Mac Avenue Events in Chattanooga. The American Advertising Awards, known as the ADDYs, is the most prominent creative competition in the world, officials said.

Each year, over 40,000 entries compete in 200 markets nationwide.

Goodwill’s award-winning video, chronicling the opening of their store, donation center and Opportunity Center in Dalton was shot and edited by Brandon Brown Productions.

Friday, November 15 is America Recycles Day, according to the Environmental Protection Agency, and Goodwill said they're ready to help the Tennessee Valley participate.

In 2023, Goodwill Industries of the Greater Chattanooga Area diverted over 9-million pounds of materials from landfills in Southeast Tennessee and Northwest Georgia, they said in on their website.

"Thanks to our partners, EPB and Dell Reconnect , our Goodwill Donation Xpress Centers recycled 139,345 pounds of electronics last year," they said on their website.

On Friday, Goodwill encourages those wanting to participate in the nationwide effort to donate gently used items, like:

According to the EPA , the national recycling rate has increased from less than 7% in 1960 to the current rate of 32%. The EPA is hoping to reach 50% by 2030.

Goodwill to Celebrate America Recycles Day with Donation Drive

Goodwill Industries of the Greater Chattanooga Area (GIGCA) is celebrating America Recycles Day with an electronics donation drive on Friday, November 15.

Every year, more than 59 million tons of electronics become e-waste, making electronics the fastest-growing waste problem in the world. Last year, GIGCA recycled 139,345 pounds of computers and IT-related equipment through a partnership with EPB and Dell Reconnect. By responsibly recycling electronics, toxic chemicals, and non-biodegradable materials are prevented from entering landfills.

“We partner with Dell and EPB to reduce waste and make it convenient for people to recycle their unwanted electronics,” said Michelle Turner, Director of Marketing and Communications at GIGCA. “The materials in these donated products can be reused in the production of new products, minimizing waste that goes into landfills and the need to generate additional materials like plastics, glass, and metals.”

Donations of electronics, including computers, monitors, printers, scanners, keyboards, tablets, mobile phones, clothes, and household goods, can be made at one of Goodwill’s 18 convenient donation locations. Goodwill To Host Open House At Newly Expanded Opportunity Center In East Brainerd

Goodwill Industries of the Greater Chattanooga Area (GIGCA) will host an open house at their newly expanded Opportunity Center in East Brainerd on Thursday, October 10 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. The Goodwill Opportunity Center is located at 7601 East Brainerd Road, Suite 121, next to the Goodwill store and Donation Xpress.

The open house will feature tours of the center, light refreshments and a meet and greet with Goodwill mission services team members.

The Goodwill store in East Brainerd was destroyed by a tornado in April 2020. It reopened with the addition of a Job Connection Center in 2021. The center was recently expanded, remodeled and renamed the Goodwill Opportunity Center – East Brainerd.

A new Goodwill is coming to the Tennessee Valley! Goodwill Industries of the Greater Chattanooga Area will celebrate the grand opening of its store and Opportunity Center in Dalton on Thursday.

Goodwill's Dalton store to open April 11

Many people know Goodwill as a great place to shop, said Michelle Turner, director of marketing and communications for Goodwill Industries of the Greater Chattanooga Area.

“But they may not know about all of the services we provide, which are funded by the sales from our stores,” she said.

Goodwill Industries of the Greater Chattanooga Area provides training, education and employment for people in its 23-county territory in Tennessee and North Georgia. It will celebrate the grand opening of its newest store at 1001 Market St. in Dalton with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday, April 11, at 8:30 a.m.

“Throughout the day, as supplies last, we will be giving away door prizes,” Turner said.

Goodwill Industries was founded in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1902. Goodwill Industries of the Greater Chattanooga Area has been helping people get the training and skills they need to find employment since 1923.

Goodwill stores sell donated clothing, furniture, housewares and other items at low prices. Revenue from sales goes toward funding Goodwill’s job training programs. Those programs include job training and placement services for people with disabilities, veterans and those facing barriers to employment. Those services may include helping people write a résumé, helping them with their interview skills and career counseling.

“It may be something as simple as helping them learn to dress for a professional setting,” Turner said.

The Dalton Goodwill store will also house an Opportunity Center that will provide such services and more to job seekers.

This will be Goodwill Industries of the Greater Chattanooga Area’s 18th store and second Opportunity Center in a store.

“The nice thing about the Dalton location is that the Opportunity Center is located inside the store, so when shoppers come in they can see it,” said Rachel Inman, senior director of mission services for Goodwill Industries of the Greater Chattanooga Area.

She said the Opportunity Center will serve people from across Northwest Georgia.

“We are going to have a computer center where people can work on their résumés,” she said. “They can work with staff who will provide tips and review. We will also have two office spaces they can go into if they have any type of virtual interviews.”

The center will have a community resource wall where local nonprofits can outline their services.

“If the people we serve are having trouble with food or clothing or shelter or anything like that, we want to be able to connect them with the places that can help them,” Inman said.

The center will also have a Donation XPress Center, which allows for quicker donations.

The store’s hours will be Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. The Opportunity Center hours will be Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at first, but officials said they hope to expand those hours eventually.

LaFayette Goodwill Grand Opening

Goodwill Industries of the Greater Chattanooga Area will celebrate the grand opening of its store in LaFayette with a celebration and ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday, March 7, at 8:30 a.m. The store will open at 9 a.m. The 111 Mize Street location includes a Goodwill retail store and a Donation Xpress center. This will be the 17th retail store location for Goodwill Industries of the Greater Chattanooga Area.

The local non-profit invites Walker County residents and those in surrounding communities to join them for the grand opening event, which will include a ribbon cutting, an appearance by Goodwill’s Smiling G mascot, as well as giveaways and door prizes throughout the day as supplies last.

The store’s hours are Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Goodwill accepts donations during regular store hours.

Goodwill Industries of the Greater Chattanooga Area employs more than 350 individuals, many of whom have barriers to employment.

“We are thrilled to reopen our LaFayette store,” said Gena Weldon, president and CEO of Goodwill Industries of the Greater Chattanooga Area. “We are committed to serving Walker County and the other 22 counties in our service area. When people shop or donate to Goodwill, they are changing lives by helping to provide job training and employment opportunities for our most vulnerable citizens.”

Goodwill opens new store in LaFayette

LAFAYETTE, Ga. (WDEF) – Goodwill of Greater Chattanooga celebrated a brand-new store Thursday.

They opened a new store on Mize Street in Lafayette.

The store also is a donation center for Goodwill.

The new Goodwill store in Lafayette.

They had door prizes throughout the day as locals came to shop for bargains during their grand opening.

Michelle Turner, communications director for Goodwill, said, “We’ve had a wonderful grand opening. I got here at 6:50, and we already had people in line this morning. I’m just so impressed with this community and their excitement to have us here.”

The store is Goodwill’s 17th retail location in our area.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE: Goodwill of Greater Chattanooga making a difference for 100 years in Scenic City

For 100 years, Goodwill Industries of Greater Chattanooga has been helping people get jobs and achieve their greatest potential.

The nonprofit operates in 23 counties between Tennessee and Georgia.

The organization wouldn't be what it is today if it wasn't for Rev. Edgar Helms. Helms created the nonprofit under the philosophy, "A hand up, not a hand out," and it still rings true 100 years later.

"Our vision is a community where people regardless of ability, situation or background can achieve their greatest potential," Gena Weldon, President and CEO of Goodwill of Greater Chattanooga, said.

Chattanooga Goodwill Industries opened as the first in Tennessee and the 25th in the world on East Main Street. The organization supplied work to the "unfortunate, crippled and down and out persons of the city."

Goodwill has always relied on community donations. In 1962, Goodwill began placing donation boxes around the city to make it easier for the community to donate.

The donations have been used in different ways over the years. At one time, women would sort clothes to cut up and sew into quilts that were later sold.

"It's all the donations from individuals over the 100 years that have made it possible for us to continue to provide opportunities to people who face barriers to employment," Weldon said.

Goodwill celebrates 100 years in Chattanooga

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – Goodwill is celebrating 100 years of local service. They currently have 15 locations in the Chattanooga area.

“We started 100 years ago in the Chattanooga area and throughout these 100 years, we have been making sure people have what they need to be successful, survive, thrive,” said Emily McHenry, Chief Mission Integration Officer for Goodwill. “We help people train to get jobs, advance in their career, and program participants. As well as our employees.”

Reverend Edgar J. Helms had the idea for the first Goodwill in Boston, Massachusetts in 1902. His plan was to fight poverty with trade skills and provide work for the poor, unemployed, and disabled.

“We make sure that not only other agencies but as well as our employees get the benefit of a higher and diverse population,” McHenry said. “We work with people with disabilities. Having a disability doesn’t mean you can’t work, it just means you can in a different way.”

Last year, Goodwill moved into its new 77,000 square foot Opportunity Campus in Chattanooga.

It includes state-of-the-art computer labs and training programs to support services for Goodwill’s more than 300 local employees.

“We are looking at each individual as a person who has a unique set of challenges, but also a unique set of skills and successful traits so everyone who comes through our programs is evaluated on what they need,” said McHenry. “We connect them with different providers in the area to make sure that they have those resources.”

As Goodwill celebrates 100 years in Chattanooga, they plan to keep changing lives through the power of work and sustainability.

“All of the proceeds from all of our stores go to making sure our mission is funded. We are helping people not just turn things from their homes and their closets and things into opportunities for a new life for that thing, also for people to have new lives and new opportunity.”

Alyssa Mingola was referred to Goodwill through Vocational Rehabilitation with the hope of gaining the skills needed to secure her first job. In Vocational Adjustment Training, Alyssa took part in the FUNdamentals of Work classes and completed 400 training hours. Throughout this experience, she gained confidence and truly blossomed in her personal and professional growth, with a focus on retail services. After completing the program, Alyssa began working as a Sales Associate at the Hixson Goodwill Store. She shared her enjoyment of being part of a team, saying, "I love that I get along with everyone and we can work together as a team."

Christy Gereighty's Success

In 2013, Christy Gereighty was looking for a change of pace and a path for growth. Christy applied for a Store Manager position at Goodwill and landed the job at the South Cleveland Goodwill. After 9 months at that location, she was asked to transfer to the East Brainerd Goodwill, where she served faithfully as the Store Manager for 10 years. In 2020, the East Brainerd store was hit by a tornado. “It was devastating,” said Christy, “One of my proudest moments with Goodwill was the Grand Opening and all the teamwork involved with its success.”
Later, an exciting opportunity arose: a Director of Retail Operations position. Facing a decade-long gap in her job search experience, Christy recognized the need for support. Knowing Goodwill's commitment to employee growth, she sought assistance from the Goodwill Opportunity Center - East Brainerd. Christy scheduled an appointment with Opportunity Center manager Taryn Balwinski.
Taryn provided guidance, helping Christy update her resume, refine her interview skills, and rediscover her strengths. Reflecting on her experience, Christy shared, "I don't believe I would have been as successful without the support of Taryn and the Opportunity Center. It helped me gain a fresh perspective."
"While some might be surprised that a highly qualified individual like Christy needed interview preparation, it demonstrates her self-awareness and wisdom," said Taryn. Christy is currently the Director of Retail Operations for six of our store locations. “My favorite thing about my job is the challenges because every day we have opportunities to make a difference!” said Christy.

We clicked right away, and she immediately began helping me find the right opportunity,” Dr. Sammons shared.

After the loss of her dad and a battle with the isolation that comes with grief, Latoria Williams was ready to get back on her feet. Through Vocational Rehab, Latoria came to Goodwill with the hope of finding a job.
Through Vocational Adjustment Training with Goodwill, Latoria earned a certificate of completion for the Microsoft Word Office (2016) module in NorthStar Digital Literacy. She completed her goal and joined our team as a sales associate at the East Brainerd store!
“Goodwill has helped me be more social," said Latoria, "I love meeting new people and my customers." The training did not stop there, Latoria continues to embody our core value of continuous improvement, constantly willing to learn and grow in her position.

After a battle with drug addiction and abuse, which eventually led to prison, Destiny refused to lose hope. She seized every opportunity for growth and transformation, emerging from her incarceration with a newfound sense of purpose. During her probation period, Destiny found solace and stability in her work at Goodwill. “Goodwill has definitely kept me on a straighter path,” she explained. Starting as a sales associate, Destiny progressed in her role, demonstrating her dedication and passion for helping others. “This is the first job I've found where I have a place where I can help people. I love the people I’ve met.”

Today, Destiny serves as the assistant manager of the Hixson location, a testament to her resilience and unwavering commitment to personal growth. With her associate's degree already in hand and her bachelor's degree on the horizon, Destiny is excited to continue making a difference in the lives of others at Goodwill.

Transforming Potential into Opportunity: Solara’s Story

Solara Sain, Vice President of Retail Operations, Goodwill Industries of the Greater Chattanooga Area

During the Bosnian war in the early 1990s, many Bosnian citizens sought safety. Thankfully, Solara Sain and her husband, Dusan, were granted the opportunity to move to the U.S. through a Lutheran Church refugee program. With an English vocabulary of just 200 words, Solara courageously began building a new life.

Solara was eager to work, so she stopped in a Goodwill store to inquire about a job. She was placed in a sales associate position, and after just one year, she was promoted to assistant store manager. She was later promoted to store manager and then to the position of Regional Director of Donor Services. From there, Solara served other Goodwill organizations as a Vice President of Donated Goods Retail and then as a Chief Operating Officer. Solara is now the Vice President of Retail Operations for Goodwill Industries of the Greater Chattanooga Area.

Solara’s story is just one of many stories about how Goodwill helps people transform their potential into opportunity. We are thankful to have Solara here at our Goodwill!

Michael's Story

Michael recently won the Rise Up award at the Goodwill Annual Awards banquet. This award recognizes a Goodwill program participant for outstanding achievement in overcoming barriers to attain and maintain employment.

Michael graduated from the Goodwill Vocational Adjustment/Work Ready program. He completed 400 hours of education and job training, in addition to earning several digital skills certificates. After graduating, Michael was hired as a store associate at the Goodwill store in East Brainerd. With the help of Goodwill, he was able to design his work schedule around his classes at Chattanooga State Community College.

“After working with Vocational Rehabilitation, Michael met with me,” says Rachel Inman, Senior Director of Missions Services. “He had some lofty goals for himself. While in the program, Michael had started going to school at Chattanooga State for Culinary Arts, coming to work training regularly and assisting around the house to help with his brothers. He was doing all of this while tackling public transportation. Each goal that he set, he conquered. We look forward to seeing how he thrives in this next phase of his life.”

Michael says his favorite part of working at Goodwill is “being with the people who care about me and helping customers and donors. I was very surprised that I won the award. I couldn’t have done it without the Goodwill team and my friends and family.”
